What are Salse di Nirano?

The phenomenon of mud volcanoes visited by many persons from all Europe

The Salse di Nirano are a wide bowl surrounded by parallel or fan-shaped furrows, created by surface water erosion called 'calanchi'. Here stand some mud volcanoes product of mainly gasous (methan) and partly liquid (oil) hydrocarbons deposits. As they ascend to soil surface, they wash out clay materials: the ejected mud is then responsible for the Salse's typical cone shape visited by many persons from all Europe. [more]
The whole area is open to the visits through easy paths. The Ca' Tassi Visitor Centre provides all the tourist informations.

By 1982 The Salse di Nirano are Riserva Naturale della Regione Emilia-Romagna. Handled by Provincia di Modena and administred by Comune di Fiorano, the Reserve hosts many typical animal of the pre-apenninic lands such as weasel, fox, badger, mole, hare, frog, lizard...
The reserve is open in all seasons except when the ground is wet for rains.
